Cupid – Love Conquers All
Greek mythology invented the god of love but we do a lot to keep him alive.
I recall taking a session in history class on this boyish character and was interested to learn that when Cupid shot his arrow into a victim’s heart, that it didn’t release a feel-good love sensation, it actually hurt the person and immediately they were aware of their pain. A pain in their heart.
Then, being aware of their pain, they look for an answer to heal them, see their intended love and fall head over heels in love.
Surely Shakespeare understood exactly this:
Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind
And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.
Nor hath love’s mind of any judgement taste;
Wings and no eyes figure unheedy haste.
And therefore is love said to be a child
Because in choice he is so oft beguiled.
Today a family member of mine is in hospital losing his battle with cancer. His wife and children have gathered to be close. They are feeling the pain of love. They are aware that very soon the comfort they have counted on will be taken from them. They are facing the truth that life does not continue indefinitely on this earth. And they are pierced through and through with the ache of their love being taken away.
However, like the song says – “I could have missed the pain, but I’d have had to miss the dance” ~
Love and pain, two sides of the same coin.
We have a choice to give our love, to accept love from others, to enjoy the love between a man and woman and to feel all the emotions gloriously associated with love! It begins as an immature feeling but can grow into a decision of vows.
As we celebrate this week of romantic love, “Eros” as it is historically referred to, we can acknowledge that it can begin as “Philos” love, a friendship and meetings of the mind, and it can grow to “Agape” love the highest level of unconditional love, one of true devotion without expectations.
Celebrate; feel your pain and embrace those in your world who bless you with their love. For this life is fleeting and stands on nothing else but LOVE.
Omnia vincit Amor: et nos cedamus Amori.
Love conquers all, and so let us surrender ourselves to Love
